You Don’t Have to Live with Acne — Here’s How to Get Rid of It
Did you think you’d be finished with acne by now? People in their 20s and 30s often still have breakouts. Just because it’s common, it’s no less frustrating!
The staff at Naaman Clinic, including Dr. Evans Bailey, understand your frustration. They know that acne can have a deep impact on your life, and they offer effective treatments.
Why, oh why, do I still have acne?
Acne develops when your body produces too much of a substance called sebum. Sebum is oil which, in the right amount, keeps your skin healthy and soft. When you have too much sebum, it combines with the dead skin cells that your body is constantly shedding and creates a blockage in your pores.
That blockage gives bacteria a place to thrive, and that leads to inflammation and infection — better known as acne. As many as 80% of teenagers have acne, but it’s not at all uncommon for it to persist into your 20s and 30s. Regardless of your age, the underlying cause of acne is clogged pores from too much sebum.
What kinds of treatments work?
If you’re like many other people, you’ve tried all kinds of home remedies that simply don’t work. There are, however, treatments for acne that are effective. You may need medication, prescription-strength topical treatments, a specific therapy, or a combination of treatments.
Medications
For example, antibiotics are often helpful, because they kill the bacteria that cause the infection and inflammation associated with acne. Other medications that may help, depending on your situation, include birth control pills, spironolactone, or a medication containing isotretinoin.
Topical treatments
Some creams and serums can help with acne, but it can be difficult to identify which one is best for you amid the marketing hype. Dr. Bailey evaluates your skin and recommends treatments based on your unique needs.
You may need a solution containing retinoids, glycolic acid, or dapsone. You may need something mild and available over the counter, or you may need a prescription. It all depends on your skin, your acne, and your medical history.
Injections
Cortisone injections can reduce inflammation. If you have scarring you’d like to address, Dr. Bailey may recommend an injection of a filler.
There are other treatments as well. Laser therapy can help get rid of acne and can also reduce the appearance of scars. A chemical peel may be appropriate.
Naaman Clinic offers treatments for acne, and for the discoloration and scarring that are sometimes a result of breakouts.
